Today I ran into a frustrating issue: I wanted to log out of my current Microsoft account on my Windows laptop and switch back to a local account. However, the “Sign in with a local account instead” option was nowhere to be found in the system’s Account settings.
I even asked Gemini 3.1 and Claude Opus 4.6 for help, but none of the steps they provided worked on my machine. They even suggested creating a new super administrator account just to delete the existing Microsoft account.
Out of desperation, I noticed an option on the page that said something like “Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically” (the exact wording might vary depending on the OS version). Without expecting much, I randomly clicked it.
Immediately after clicking, a new option popped up right next to it: “Sign in with a Microsoft account”.
I clicked it and went through the process of signing in with my Microsoft account all over again.
Once that was done, the missing “Sign in with a local account instead” option magically reappeared right where it was supposed to be.
